Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp has proposed that online gambling companies be allowed to operate within their province. Why? Because they want a part of the estimated $450 million that the people of Ontario bet online per year.
The Gaming Corp estimates that $100 million could be brought in within the next 5 years.
The plan is to start introducing online gaming to their economy next year which will add to the revenue that their lottery and casinos bring in per year which is about $1.9 billion.
The OLG is promising "responsible gaming" features on its site, such as "self-control options that pop up on the screen" asking gamblers if they are playing too much, and possibly online chats with counsellors.
There will also be a system for age verification to keep minors off the site but lottery spokesman Tony Bitonti acknowledged that will be a challenge.
