What does the forum think? Is this newest scare tactic going a bit to far?                                                                                               Pam

here in arkansas THEY(our state legislators) just passed a law this week that you cannot smoke in a vehicle with kids 14 and under. you already can''t smoke in a store, restaurant, etc. what's next? going to give tickets for smoking outside? we do that too, at city county and state ballparks, parks and recreation. yet they tax us to death on them.

I was gonna get up and comb my hair this morning but ..... I was just waiting for the government to tell me how to do that .. I mean, exactly how I have to comb it, I'm sure they're working on that !!

I'm a smoker and that makes perfect sense to me. I know we get up in arms that the gov't tells us what we can and cannot do, but that law is protecting children who can't protect themselves.

If they want to scare people, put the odds of cashing out from one of our casinos on the packs :surprise: In all seriousness, I'm not a smoker - never have been nor will be. The warnings that they put on the packs don't change anyone's proclivity to smoke. It seems like most smokers started when they were in their early teens when just about everyone thinks that they are indestructable - they don't care what the warning says because whatever horrible malady the feds are warning about won't happen to them.Do the warnings have any effect on smokers older than 25 or 30? - or have the years of nicotine and the habits that people get used to with smoking (smoking while driving, a cigarette with your coffee, etc) made them effectively immune to the message? I hear most smokers say that they want to quit, but it seems that smoking is so engrained in so many things that they do that quitting is nearly impossible - and that's not even considering the addictive properties of nicotine. In the end, it seems that programs like this don't deter very many people from starting or quitting - just making people who can't quit feel bad about themselves. The only thing that seems to make quitting effective is a serious personal medical scare - and even that doesn't work all the time. Here's the background story on one of the photos and messages that was rejected for the packs. It's sad and disturbing, but interesting to see where their thought process on this is.

That picture does infact scare me, as I am a smoker.I must say, if I had to look at that picture or others similar for more than a fleeting moment, I wouldnt be able to handle it.I know I should quit, I know it causes cancer, I know I put myself at terrible risk but I continue. This is one reason why...........My Mother was 40 years old and had 4 children, and one on the way.  She quit smoking so she could live longer to raise us kids, and spend time with her grandchildren. One year later she was minding her own business coming home from work when a drunk driver going the wrong way on the expressway killed her instantly.  Guess that her quitting smoking didnt increase her chances of surviving one bit.Life is short...I could die tomorrow, I live like every day may possibly be my last.  I'm sure you may understand why.                                                                                                Pam
