Clark County firefighters battled a fire at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

According to the Clark County Fire Department, trees and pool cabanas surrounding the pool at the Cosmopolitan were on fire. Fire officials have closed Las Vegas Boulevard South from Tropicana Avenue to Flamingo Road as crews battle the two-alarm blaze.

According to a report, firefighters have put out the flames and are checking for any extensions to the building, spokeswoman for the Clark County Fire Department Sandra Baker said.

Certain floors of the Cosmopolitan were being evacuated because of smoke, she said.

A witness said the fire quickly consumed half the cabanas around the pool, and that guests were running and screaming as the fire spread. Fox 5 in Las Vegas is reporting that two people have been burned.

At least two people were burned by a fire at the Cosmopolitan hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The fire was reported at 12:15 p.m.

According to Clark County Fire Chief Erik Newman, the fire happened on the 14th floor of the resort property.

Pictures sent to the FOX5 Newsroom showed a massive fire in the pool area. Palm trees could be seen ablaze and thick, black smoke was billowing from the scene.

Video from the FOX5 camera atop the Stratosphere tower showed that the fire appeared to be extinguished by 12:55 p.m.

A "ridiculously fast"-spreading fire at the Bamboo Pool at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas early this afternoon clouded the Las Vegas Strip with plumes of smoke, sent at least one person to the hospital and for a time caused closure of a main portion of the Las Vegas Strip.

A witness who was on the Bamboo Pool deck during the blaze told the Sun that employees believe the fire was started by a cigarette tossed from one of the hotel's top floors, or possibly discarded by a guest at the pool, into a bush on the pool deck.

The witness said the fire consumed half of the cabanas around the pool in less than a minute. Guests were running and screaming as the fire spread "ridiculously fast," and the entire pool deck area was quickly evacuated.

Clark County spokeswoman Sandra Baker said crews with the Clark County Fire Department extinguished the flames, trying to clear the smoke and checking the adjoining building to be sure the fire had not spread. Las Vegas Fire & Medical crews also assisted at the scene.

In a tweet, CCFD reported one person was transported to a hospital after the fire. Several areas of the Cosmopolitan, which opened in 2010 with 2,995 hotel rooms, were evacuated.

Las Vegas Boulevard South was closed from Tropicana Avenue to Flamingo Road from 12:45 to about 1:30 p.m. Harmon Avenue west of Las Vegas Boulevard remained closed.
