That led to so much heartache for the people and the country.

Maybe not as much as Nixon and others and their war on drugs. In particular, marijuana. I hope I live long enough to enjoy many years of the end of this reefer madness in the USA. So many people can be helped in so many ways and so many have been hurt along the way either by the law or the outlaws profiting because of the law.
Just like the gangsters running liquor back in the 1920's.

It seems crazy to me that it ever happened. A lot of good it did, Booze was still available, just underground.

If people want something bad enough, they will find a way to get it. Just like drugs, marijuana, etc
