As the jackpot in the multi-state Powerball lottery passes $500 million, hopeful ticket buyers queue up outside Rosie’s Den in White Hills, Ariz. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

Associated Press - Monday, March 14, 2016 | 9:15 a.m.

A popular cafe on the route to Las Vegas has stopped selling the lottery tickets it is known for.

Rosie's Den, located in White Hills, Arizona, about 60 miles southeast of Las Vegas on U.S. Highway 93, sold its last tickets on Feb. 28. Three other places within a mile of Rosie's Den still sell tickets, but fans of the cafe are upset to see the service go.

Rosie's Den owner Brad Larsen says without a jackpot, lottery tickets don't make enough money to be financially feasible. When the cage was still selling them, staff operated three terminals for selling lottery tickets, all of which needed to be staffed during the run-up to a big jackpot.

Larsen says the profits he made from lottery tickets weren't enough to cover the previous year's sales tax.

Nevada does not have a lottery so their residents flock to Arizona businesses to purchase tickets especially when the Powerball reaches record amounts.

I never realized the financial burden that it could put on retail establishments.
