On Thursday, 2/2/12, a roly-poly rodent named Punxsutawney Phil was hoisted from his burrow in front of TV cameras and cheering crowds and called upon to predict the weather. Phil emerged and saw his shadow, which, according to legend, means that winter is here to stay for six more weeks.

Feb 2, 1887:First Groundhog Day</h2>On this day in 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.-- Edited by Mben on Thursday 2nd of February 2012 01:07:38 PM
