(PRESS RELEASE) -- GAN, a leading B2B supplier of internet gambling enterprise software-as-a-service solutions to the U.S. land-based casino industry, welcomes today’s final approval by both the Michigan Senate and the Michigan House of Representatives of HB 4926.

The bill includes provisions for the legalization of full real-money internet casino gaming in the state, as well as internet sports betting. The bill will now be presented to the Governor of Michigan and may then be signed into law at the Governor’s discretion.

GAN anticipates serving one or more land-based casino operators in Michigan with real-money internet gambling technology and supporting services commencing in 2019.

With a population of 10.0 million, Michigan materially increases the number of Americans who will be permitted to play internet casino games and bet on sports online. The Michigan regulated internet gambling market is now expected to commence in 2020 and GAN is strongly positioned to serve Michigan casino operators in that state following successful launch of internet casino and sports betting in the State of New Jersey in September 2018 and the forthcoming launch in Pennsylvania in H1 2019.

Dermot Smurfit, CEO of GAN, commented, “Michigan is now America’s sixth state to regulate internet gambling, joining Nevada, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This reinforces our belief that the regulatory cycle for internet gambling in the U.S. will now be rapid. GAN is one of only two fully licensed B2B-only platform vendors in New Jersey, has the largest casino in Pennsylvania as a client and is one of the very few B2B-only technology vendors with the requisite technical expertise and Day 1 New Jersey experience to credibly serve Michigan’s land-based casinos.”

Hi...

Although Michigan has changed their stance on internet gambling, Microgaming as a whole does not accept USA players.

That is how I understand it anyway.

I live in Michigan myself.

Hi bernadette,

Assuming you live in Michigan, you need to check what their new law states. Each of the six states that now have legalized online gambling have their own certain rules.

For example ...

Delaware became the first state to legalize online gambling in 2012. The market opened up in November 2013 with sites operated through the state’s three horse tracks. This includes Dover Downs, Delaware Park, and Harrington Raceway. These sites offer a variety of Blackjack, Roulette, Video Slots and Video Poker games.

New Jersey passed its online gambling law in 2013. This allowed Atlantic City casinos to apply for internet gaming permits and host a variety of online poker and online casino sites under those licenses. source

That means they allow you to gamble at the sites that have the specific state's gambling license.

And for the record ... it is NOT illegal to gamble online. Basically, what is illegal is banking institutions allowing banking transactions for gambling online.

The first myth that should immediately be dispelled is that online gambling (by the gambler himself/herself) is in anyway prohibited by Federal law. That myth is absolutely untrue and stems from a poor understanding of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. One of the provisions of this act has to do with Wire Transfers, and it essentially states that no person or entity may knowingly accept any funds associated with a person participating in illegal online gambling. The key component of the wording is that they may not, "Accept," your money, it has no bearing on your ability to send the money. source

I hope this helps you understand better. :)

Just before Christmas, Michigan’s state legislature approved an online gambling bill. However, on Friday, Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed nearly 40 bills, including House Bill 4926, which would have legalized intrastate gaming from Michigan’s state commercial and tribal casino operators.

Gov. Snyder gave his response to the matter in a letter, saying, “I do not think it is appropriate to sign legislation that will effectively result in more gambling, with a reasonable chance that the state could lose revenue that could be helpful in dealing with social service issues that are ordinarily attendant to increased gambling behavior.”

Snyder demonstrated his understanding for the time and effort put into the bills by saying, “A significant amount of work went into these bills and getting them to a place where several stakeholders either expressed support or neutrality, and I appreciate that many pro-gaming stakeholders coalesced around these bills.”

He continued, “However, due to largely unknown budgetary concerns, I believe this legislation merits more careful study and comparison with how other states have, or will, authorize online gaming. To be blunt, we simply don’t have the data to support this change at the time.”

If Snyder had signed off on the legislation, Michigan would have joined the list of U.S. states to approve online gambling. Another factor that Snyder referred to influencing his decision to veto was to protect the Michigan Lottery.

The bills that would have regulated Internet gaming in Michigan and most likely would have paved the way for sports gambling in the state were by state Reps. Brandt Iden and Klint Kesto. Another sports gambling-related bill sponsored by Iden, called the "Fantasy Contests Consumer Protection Act," would have regulated fantasy sports in Michigan, but Snyder returned it for approval.

Snyder's action comes just days before he will give up his office to Gretchen Whitmer on 1 January. It is likely that another attempt at an online gambling bill will occur once the legislation’s new session begins on 9 January.
