You might dislike him for his anti-online poker position, but the man could help bring the National Football League to Las Vegas.

Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson has proposed a $1 billion stadium in Las Vegas for a NFL team and has met with the Oakland Raiders, among other teams, to discuss it, according to media reports.

Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corp. is pitching a public-private partnership for a domed stadium near the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The school would also use the stadium, according to a report from the Associated Press. The state legislature would need to approve public funds for the project. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sands wants $780 million in public funds.

The NFL earlier this month shot down an attempt by the Raiders to move to Los Angeles.

Even if Las Vegas doesn’t get a NFL team, the stadium is still of interest to Sands.

“We are moving forward with the stadium concept with or without an NFL team,” a company executive said last week, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We see a lot more opportunities — conference championships, bowl games, NFL exhibition football, boxing, soccer, neutral site games, and music festivals. There is an entire segment out there.”

In January, UNLV bought a 42-acre site that the proposed stadium could be built on.

Bringing a NFL team to Las Vegas might prove difficult, given the league’s anti-gambling stance. NHL officials are still mulling over whether to let the city have an expansion team. Quebec City has also submitted an expansion team application. It’s not certain either location will get one.

The under construction T-Mobile Arena, a $375 million project from MGM Resorts International, is the possible venue for a professional hockey team in Las Vegas.
